Lake Travis Soccer News

Four Lake Travis Soccer Teams Qualify for Division One

The Lake Travis Youth Soccer Association is proud to announce that four of its eleven select teams - the 97G Black, 97B (U11), 94G (U14) and 92G (U16) teams - qualified to play Division I-level soccer for the Fall 2008 season. This was based on their top-four finishes in the Spring 2008 President’s Cup.  The four DI teams will mark the most-ever for Lake Travis Soccer Club in one season.  The 97G Black, 97B and 92G all played Super II during the Fall 2007 season and then played President’s Cup (This is made up of the top Super II and middle DI teams) for the Spring 2008 season.  The 94G were the first ever LT team to play DI during the Fall 2007 season and they re-qualified for DI this Spring.

The 97G Black and 97B are the youngest DI teams the club has placed in the top level of select soccer.  The 97B, who are coached by the club’s Director of Player Development, Ceri Richards, have lost just one league game between the Fall and Spring seasons and have won all three tournaments they have entered.  They look to advance to the State Championships be finishing in the top-two at the bracket playoffs this coming weekend (May 17-18) in Austin. The fact that we have two of the younger teams already qualifying for DI after only one season shows the depth and quality of the Rec and Rec+ Soccer programs at Lake Travis.

The 94G team, which is coached the club’s Director of Coaching, Tim Chestney, narrowly missed out on advancing to the South Texas Youth Soccer Association’s (STYSA) 2008 President’s Cup State Championships.  The 94G finished tied for 2nd place in the Spring 2008 league standings (top two teams advance to state playoffs), but missed out by goal difference in the tie breakers.  The 94G also boast one of the top players  in South Texas in Pryanka Guar, who was selected for the second year in a row to the 2008 STYSA Olympic Development Program’s (ODP) South Texas State Team.  The ODP state team is selected from all players in the entire South Texas region and then competes against other states at the US Youth Soccer Region III ODP Camp in Montevallo, Alabama July 12-16, 2008.  Both Chestney and Richards were named to the STYSA ODP Coaching Staff this past year and will coach the STYSA ODP State Teams this coming July in Alabama.

The 92G team has blazed the trail of success for the younger select teams at LT.  The 92G won the Super II South Texas State Championship (U15) during the Fall 2006 season (an undefeated season), becoming (along with LT’s 93G team) the first-ever Super II-level State Champions for Lake Travis.  The team, which is coached by Darci Carruthers, who is a former standout goalkeeper at both Portland and the University of Texas, is currently in 2nd place in the Spring 2008 President’s Cup standings and will advance to the State Championships with a win in their last league game on May 17.

The club, which has had five South Texas State Champions since 2003, has tryouts upcoming for the U12-U18 age groups on May 19-20 or May 27-28.  The club’s record four Division I teams could be surpassed quickly as the new U11 (’98) teams are being formed May 12-14 and at least one of those teams may soon be playing DI soccer.  Just five years ago the club had only two Super II-level select teams with the rest playing DII-level select.

The top two teams from the bracket playoffs will advance to the STYSA Presidents Cup State Championships on May 24-25 in Austin.  The nine-team Spring 2008 President's Cup league consists of top Super II-level teams and middle/lower Division I teams from the Fall.  The 97B have qualified for Fall 2008 Division I play based on their first or second place finish this Spring.

95G Heading to Spring 2008 State Championships

The 97G (U11) Red and 95B (U13) both advanced to the Director’s Cup bracket playoffs semifinals over the May 3-4 weekend in Corpus Christi, TX, but both teams came up one victory short of advancing to the STYSA State Playoffs (the bracket playoff champion and runner-up advance to state).

The 97G Red played against the eventual champions (Padre Hurricanes – Corpus Christi) in the semifinal, losing 3-0 and falling just short of advancing to state playoffs in both the Fall and Spring seasons.  The 97G Red finished 3rd in state at the Fall 2007 Division II State Playoffs.  The 97G Red have qualified to move up a division and will play Super II-level for the Fall 2008 season.

The 95B followed a similar path, advancing to the bracket playoff semifinals where they fell 3-0 to the Hawks (San Antonio).  The 95B also just missed out on playing at the State Championships in both the Fall and Spring seasons and will also compete at the Super II level for the Fall 2008 season.  The 95B finished 4th in state at the Fall 2007 DII State Playoffs.

Spring 2008 Director’s Cup Success for 97G Red, 95B & 95G

The Lake Travis 97G Red (U11), 95B  & 95G (U13) select teams all qualified for Director’s Cup bracket playoffs May 3-4, 2008.  The 95B team finished league play 3-1 and at the top of group A. The 97G Red finished the regular season at 3-1-1, good for 2nd place in group B. The 95G finished 2nd in Group A at 5-1-1 and advanced to bracket playoffs.  The 97G Red and 95B will head to Corpus Christi for bracket playoffs, with the top two teams (out of six) advancing to Houston for the State Playoffs May 17-18.  The 95G will have bracket playoffs in Austin with the top two teams (out of four) advancing to STYSA State Cup playoffs in Houston. All three teams have pre-qualified for Fall 2008 Super II play by virtue of their playoff advancement.  Both the 97G Red and 95B started the season in Division II.

Lana Bowen Named to Lake Travis Coaching Staff

Lake Travis Director of Coaching, Tim Chestney, is pleased to announce that Lana Bowen has been named to the Lake Travis coaching staff for the Spring 2008 season.

Bowen played at Santa Clara University from 2001-2004, where she was a key defender for the team that won the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2001.  Bowen was named Most Improved Player as a freshman during the Broncos 2001 national championship season, scoring a goal and earning three assists while part of a back line that shutout 14 opponents.

Bowen, who played for legendary college coach Jerry Smith and advanced to three Final Fours during her time at Santa Clara, including losing in the National Championship match to Portland in Austin in 2002, will work with the girl’s teams in both Rec Plus and Select for Lake Travis.  During her time at Santa Clara, the economics major played with current U.S. National Team players Aly Wagner and Leslie Osborne.

“I’m very excited to add Lana to our coaching staff,” says LT Director Tim Chestney.  “Lana brings a wealth of experience and knowledge as both a player and a coach.  I think the girls in the club are going to have a fantastic role model that they can learn from and look up to.”

After her collegiate career, Bowen moved to Oslo, Norway where she played professional soccer for ROA Dynamite Girls in 2006.

In terms of coaching experience, Bowen coached the San Carlos Inferno U12 girls and worked the Santa Clara University Soccer Camps from 2001-2005.  Bowen holds her USSF (United States Soccer Federation) “E” License.

Bowen will coach the '99G Rec Plus team during the Spring 2008 season.
